“What is that bed that the Lord instruct to take up ? It is the bed, that David had “drenched all night with his tears” (Psalm 6: 6). It is the bed of passion, where our souls lie, a victim of the bitterness and suffering of the conscience; Yet, when we walk according to the precepts of Christ, our bed would be that of repose, not of pain. The mercies of God have changed the place of death into that of His resurrection, and turned the sleep of death into something we look forward to enjoy. He did not only instruct him to take up his bed, but to “go his way to his house,” that is to say, to go back to paradise, the true home that received the first man, who lost it by the deceit of the devil.
