“As no darkness can be seen by anyone surrounded by light, so no trivialities can capture the attention of anyone who has his eyes on Christ.” St Gregory of Nyssa

‘When once you have put your hand to the plough, you must not look back. When once you stand on the housetop, you must think no more of your clothes within. To escape your Egyptian mistress, you must abandon the cloak that belongs to this world. Even Elijah, in his quick translation to heaven could not take his mantle with him, but left in the world the garments of the world’

“Just as a lamp lights up a dark room, so the fear of God, when it penetrates the heart of a man illuminates him, teaching him all the virtues and commandments of God.” – Abba James #light #dailyreading #coptic #copticorthodox #christianity #christians

“What then? Do you command us to live for display and vain glory? Far from it…..but Let your light shine. That is, Let your virtue be great, and the fire abundant, and the light unspeakable. For when virtue is so great, it cannot lie hidden, though its pursuer shade it over ten thousand fold. Present unto them an irreprehensible life, and let them have no true occasion of evil speaking; and then, though there be thousands of evil-speakers, no man shall be able to cast any shade upon you.” – St. John Chrysostom

“As when the light enters into a dark home and casts away (Chases) its darkness and lightens it, as well as when God’s fear enters the man’s heart, it will cast away (chase) ignorance and learn him all the virtues and wisdoms.” – St. Anthony the Great #fasting #lent #light #sharelight #coptic #copticorthodox #dailyreadings

“You are light. Sin is darkness. And light is capable of extinguishing the darkness… Do you have this spiritual awesomeness which disperses the darkness from around you? Does your mere presence make the people around you unable to utter idle or unsuitable words or behave unfittinglly? Does your presence make them feel that you bring the presence of God amongst them?”

The rays of the Word are eternally prepared to shine, as long as the windows of the soul are open through the simple faith. – St. Hilary, bishop of Poitier

Why are we living? Why are we breathing? What would it be for us, if we fail to behold our Lord? If those who cannot see the light of the sun count life as being worse than death, so what would it be for those who are deprived of beholding the light of the Lord? St. John Chrysostom

Walk as children of light for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth, finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
“God is the true light and through Him we see light. The nearer we come to God the true light, the more we shine. This resembles the light of the sun and that of the moon. The sun itself is light but the moon is a dark body. It receives light from the sun. The closer the moon is to the sun, the brighter the light reflected on it (by the sun) is… anyone who lives in companionship with God receives God’s light which overflows upon him, then he shines and people see his light” Pope Shenouda

For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ – 2 Corinthians 4:6
For this reason, too, you will be called the ‘newly enlightened’ because, if you wish, the light can always be new for you, and will never be extinguished. Night brings to an end the daily light of our world, whether we wish it or not, but darkness has no knowledge of that heavenly light… the earth is bright just so long as the rays of the sun endure. Not so with the soul. It is illuminated and becomes brighter when it receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. Consider now the comparison more carefully. When the night comes and all is dark, one often sees a rope, but thinks it’s a snake; one flees an approaching friend thinking he is an enemy; one is greatly frightened at any noise. So it is with our soul. When divine grace comes, it drives away our darkness, and we recognise things for what they are, contemptuous of our former fears. We no longer fear death, for we have learned that death is not death, but a sleep and temporary rest. We do not fear poverty, or sickness, or any such thing because we know we are on our way to a better life, pure and incorruptible, and free from all such contingencies. .
-St John Chrysostom .

“The world was knocked about in the very dark mazes, and in shameful ignorance. The cloud of ignorance forbade the multitude of people from seeing the Lord Jesus, the redeemer. He is the God of truth and justice, the Lord of all was manifested to the Israelites, a light to them and a sun to their souls.”
