A humble man is never rash, hasty or perturbed, never has any hot and volatile thoughts, but at all times remains calm. Even if heaven were to fall and cleave to the earth, the humble man would not be dismayed… For the humble man is always at rest, because there is nothing which can agitate or shake his mind. Just as no one can frighten a mountain, so the mind of a humble man cannot be frightened. If it be permissible and not incongruous, I should say that the humble man is not of this world. For he is not troubled and altered by sorrows, nor amazed and enthused by joys, but all his gladness and his real rejoicing are in the things of his Master. Humility is accompanied by modesty and self-collectedness: that is, chastity of the senses; a moderate voice; mean speech; self-belittlement; poor raiment; a gait that is not pompous; a gaze directed towards the earth; superabundant mercy; easily flowing tears; a solitary soul; a contrite heart; imperturbability to anger; undistributed senses; few possessions; moderation in every need; endurance; patience; fearlessness; manliness of heart born of a hatred of this temporal life; patient endurance of trials; deliberations that are ponderous, not light, extinction of thoughts; guarding of the mysteries of chastity; modesty, reverence; and above all, continually to be still and always to claim ignorance – St Isaac the Syrian . . #dailyreadings #copticorthodox #orthodoxy #obedience #humility #feastofstjohntheshort

“O Lord, truly I am your servant” – Psalm 116:16 . “Do we return thanks to our servants, for waiting upon us?  By no means.  Yet God is thankful even to us, who serve not Him (as we should), but  rather do that which is expedient for ourselves. But let us not act as if God owed us thanks. Let us act instead as if we were paying a debt.  For the matter truly is a debt, and all that we do is of a debt.  For if when we purchase slaves with our money, we wish them to live altogether for us; and for whatever they have, to have it for us, how much more must it be so with Him, Who brought us out of nothing into being; and Who, after this, bought us with His precious Blood, having paid such a price for us as no one would endure to pay even for his own son, and Who shed His own Blood for us?  If therefore we had ten thousand souls – even if we should lay them all down for Him – would this make an equal return?  By no means.  And why?  Because He did this owing us nothing; instead, the whole was a matter of grace.  But we, on the other hand, are debtors.  Being God Himself, He became a servant; and not being subject to death, He subjected Himself to death in the flesh.  We – if we do not voluntarily lay down our lives for Him now –  must by the law of nature must certainly lay them down later. The same is also true in the case of riches; if we do not bestow them on our fellow men now for His sake, we shall render them up from necessity at our end.  So it is also with humility. Although we are not willingly  humble for His sake, we shall be made humble by tribulations, by calamities, by over-ruling powers.  Do you see, therefore, how great is the grace!  Our Lord does all the work, making us humble by these things, and then He rewards us for the humility He has implanted in us.” – St. John Chrysostom #Humility #servantofGod #HeInstitutedForUsThisGreatSacramentWhereforeHeResolvedToGiveHimselfForTheLifeOfTheWorld #sacrifice #orthodox #coptic #dailyreadings

Jesus spoke these words… O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. John 17:5 . . . Be released from that self which you worship instead of God and which you try always to glorify and exalt before others. Does the world glorify you, my beloved brother? And do you accept this? … Do you not know that glory is due to God alone because He is the Creator and the author of all creation? He alone is self-existent, eternal, powerful and present everywhere… Do you not know that when you glorify yourself or when you let others glorify you, you rob one of God’s attributes and ascribe it to yourself!! … When people praise you, remember the two beautiful verses which say, “I do not receive honor from men.” “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself ‘ (John. 5:41, 17:5). Learn them by heart and repeat them always within you. – Pope Shenouda #praise #glory #dailyreadings #holy50 #humility #selfforgetfulness
